FAQ

These our the most frequently asked questions about our Robotics & Programming Classes. Feel free to reach out to info@homehackercamp.com for additional information.

What is the advantages/disadvantages of taking the online instructor-led class vs the online self paced?

The self paced classes allow you to do the class on your own schedule & pace. It is less expensive. This works best if you cannot meet at the weekly scheduled time slots. If you get stuck or have a question you can email your questions to info@homehackercamp.com for assistance.

The advantages of the online instructor-led classes are that you are able to interact with other students as well as the instructor. There is a large amount of class discussion and everyone discusses topics throughout the each class session. Students enjoy seeing each other’s solutions and help troubleshooting for each other. The course meets on a regular basis, providing structure which is positive for most students. Students often become friends and sometimes meet online outside of class and even play games together outside of class time. We’ve had classes with students from across the US including: Alaska, Florida, Ohio, Vermont, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and more. It is fun to get to know the other students.

Are the self-paced classes a recording of the online instructor-led classes?

No. While the online self paced classes cover the same material as the online-instructor led classes, they are not recordings of the online instructor-led classes. The sessions are taught in a one-to-one format (instructor to individual student). The instructor poses questions directly to the individual student where they are asked to pause the video to work on the specific challenge.

How long is each video and how long will it take my student to finish the online self-paced class?

There are over 100 videos in the Level 1 Robotics & Programming Level 1 online self-paced class. It is designed as a semester long course. Video lessons range from 5 mins to 20 mins but there is always video pausing and work time throughout the lesson. The length of time it takes each student to complete the course varies significantly, depending on the student. Some students will pause the given video lesson and work 30 – 45 mins (or longer) to get a challenge “exactly” correct. Others will spend 10 -20 mins and say the met the challenge “good enough”. Either result is fine. You want to let those who strive for detail and perfection to work towards that goal. But, it is not wrong if a student feels satisfied with a less precise result.

What if my child misses a live on-online class?

Just let the instructor know and we will record that class session for you! You can watch it at your convenience.

Please note that we have had students take the online instructor led classes from a variety of locations including: camping tents, gymnasiums, kitchens, vacation spots, grand parent’s houses, libraries, churches and even waiting rooms. So, you don’t have to be “at your house” to take a live class.

What type of computer do I need?

You will need a computer (with Zoom) to watch the course sessions. You can use the same computer or a different computer to do the programming. The programming computer can be Windows, Mac or Chrome although Windows or Mac systems are highly preferred. We do not allow Chromebook in the online instructor-led classes for the programming portion of the class.

What supplies do I need?

Besides a computer, a few household items are needed. Supplies needed include: 4AA batteries, painter’s or masking tape, safety pin, 3 balloons. The robot is included in the cost of the course and will be shipped to you.

Can my homeschooler get credit for this course?

Most homeschoolers count this as an elective course (STEM).

Do you offer financial aid?
